CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a condition marked by profound fatigue, weakness, and flu-like symptoms that may last from months to years.

CFS has become known only in the past few decades and is a mysterious condition as there is no obvious cause, no clear tests to make a diagnosis, and there are few (if any) medical treatment options available. This condition is not very common. It is estimated to affect about 60,000 Canadians.

The exact cause of CFS is not known, but there are several possible causes that have been suggested, including:

• Chemical sensitivities or toxic exposure

• Chronic inflammation

• Chronic low blood pressure

• Hormonal imbalance—low cortisol, DHEA, or thyroid levels

• Hypoglycemia—low blood sugar

• Immune system dysfunction

• Infection with a cold, virus (Epstein-Barr virus or Human Herpes Virus 6), or yeast [Candida albicans)

• Iron-deficiency anemia

• Stress

While there are many mysteries surrounding CFS, there are various lifestyle approaches and nutritional supplements that can help improve quality of life in those suffering with this condition.

DIAGNOSIS FOR CFS

According to the International Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Study Group—a group of doctors and researchers who determined a standard method for defining CFS—a person meets the diagnostic criteria of CFS when unexplained persistent fatigue occurs for six months or more with at least four of the eight primary signs and symptoms listed below.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

Primary signs and symptoms:

•  Extreme exhaustion after normal exercise or exertion

•  Headache of a new type, pattern, or severity

•  Loss of memory or concentration

•  Pain that moves from one joint to another without swelling or redness

•  Painful and mildly enlarged lymph nodes in your neck or armpits

•  Sleep disturbance

•  Sore throat

•  Unexplained muscle soreness

Other signs and symptoms:

Abdominal pain Alcohol intolerance

Bloating

Chest pain

Chronic cough

Diarrhea

Dizziness

Dry eyes and mouth

Earache

Irregular heartbeat

Jaw pain

Morning stiffness

Nausea

Night sweats

Psychological problems, such as depression, irritability, anxiety disorders, and panic attacks

Shortness of breath

Tingling sensations

Weight loss

RISK FACTORS

CFS is more common among women, but sex is not a proven risk factor for this condition. It is thought that women are more likely to report the symptoms to their doctors than men.

DOCTOR’S ORDERS

There is no specific drug treatment for chronic fatigue syndrome. Lifestyle measures are often tried first. Doctors may prescribe medications to address certain symptoms. However, these drugs can cause side effects that may actually be worse than the symptoms of the condition. These medications include antidepressants (Paxil, Zoloft, and Wellbutrin), anti-anxiety drugs (Xanax and Ativan), anti-inflammatory drugs (Motrin), and allergy drugs (antihistamines and decongestants).

Dietary Recommendations

Foods to include:

•  Fish provides omega-3 fatty acids that reduce inflammation.

• Vegetables, fruits, and whole grains are rich in essential nutrients for immune function and optimal health. Choose organic produce to avoid harmful pesticides.

• Yogurt contains beneficial bacteria that support immune function and digestion.

Food to avoid:

•  Processed and fast foods contain chemicals that may trigger allergic reactions and stress the body, worsening symptoms.

• Caffeine can affect sleep quality and cause irritability and anxiety.

•  Refined flour and sugar can affect immune function and cause blood sugar imbalances, which may worsen hypoglycemia.

Lifestyle Suggestions

•  Reduce stress—promote relaxation with meditation, yoga, stretching, and breathing exercises.

• Get adequate sleep, which is essential to help the body recover from illness and to help cope with stress.

•  Exercise—light to moderate activity can help improve both physical and emotional symptoms. Try to get a combination of both aerobic activities (walking, biking, and swimming) along with resistance training (working out with weights or machines) and stretching. Some people with CFS are sensitive to exercise and overexertion can worsen fatigue. It is important to start slowly and gradually increase intensity and duration.

•  Don’t smoke—smoking causes damage to the nervous system and can worsen CFS symptoms.

• Acupuncture and massage are helpful for relieving pain, promoting relaxation, and improving sleep.

• Change the air filters in your home. Pollution and germs can cause symptoms similar to CFS.

Top Recommended Supplements

B-complex vitamins: Some studies have shown that those with CFS have B-vitamin deficiencies (particularly B6 and B12). B-vitamins are required for energy production, enzyme reactions, and many other vital body processes. Look for a supplement that provides the range of B-vitamins and take daily.

L-carnitine: Required for energy production in cells. Those with CFS may be deficient and supplements have shown benefits for reducing fatigue and other symptoms. Dosage: 1-2 g three times daily.

Magnesium: Levels may be depleted in those with CFS and supplements may help improve energy and emotional symptoms. Dosage: 200 mg three times daily.

Complementary Supplements

Coenzyme Q10: Essential for energy production in the cells. Dosage: 100 mg twice daily.

Fish oils: Help reduce inflammation and support brain function. Preliminary research shows benefits for reducing CFS symptoms. Dosage: 1-3 g daily. Look for a product that provides at least 400 mg EPA and 200 mg DHA per gram of fish oil.

NADH: Supports energy production in the body. Preliminary research shows reduction in fatigue and other symptoms. Dosage: 10 mg daily on an empty stomach.

FINAL THOUGHTS

To reduce symptoms of CFS and improve quality of life, consider the following

1.  Eat more organic fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, and yogurt.

2.  Reduce stress and get adequate sleep.

3.  Exercise regularly.

4. Try acupuncture and massage.

5.  Consider supplements of B-complex vitamins, magnesium, and L-carnitine.
