CONTRACEPTIVE OPTIONS – HORMONAL METHODS – INJECTION (BRAND NAME: DEPO-PROVERA)
Depo-Provera shots are injections of progestin given once every three months. The progestin acts by inhibiting ovulation, preventing sperm from reaching the egg, and preventing a fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus. The failure rate is less than one per one hundred women.
It can cause weight gain, mood changes, and increase the risk of osteoporosis with long-term use. Depo shots are usually given by a health care provider.
