CONTRACEPTIVE OPTIONS – BARRIER METHODS – MALE CONDOMS
The male condom is a thin sheath that is placed over an erect penis to contain the sperm after ejaculation. It is used once and discarded. Most condoms are made of either latex rubber or polyurethane, which is less likely than latex to cause an allergic reaction. Condoms are the best protection against sexually transmitted diseases, though those made from natural materials (such as those labeled «lambskin,» made from lamb intestines) are not as effective as synthetic condoms at preventing disease and have a higher risk of breakage. The failure rate is eleven out of one hundred women.
